Institutional data: Overview of Industry


For an overview of the magazine industry IPC media is the biggest company to publish any type of magazines; it produces over 85 brands of magazines. IPC reaches almost two thirds of women and 44% of men in the UK and altogether it is round about 27 million adults in the UK, also the online brands reaches to 20 million users every month.
The IPC Company offers a magazine for everyone however they mainly focus on three audiences: men, mass market women and upmarket woman.

For the target audience of men IPC produces magazine brands which will appeal to them such as: country life, horse & hound, rugby world and decanter for lifestyle brand which they will enjoy for their hobbies interests however they also produce nuts, mouse breaker and NME which is mainly targeted for men.

For the mass market woman target audience they produce famous women’s weeklies and gossip magazine to attract them such as: Look, Now, Chat and Woman. These magazines attract the mass market woman because they are cheap, affordable, girl, gossip magazines which most women would want to read about. They also produce TV entertainment brand including: What’s on TV, TV Times and TV & satellite week. They chose these magazines for these women because a stereotypical woman would be at home watching TV and wants to know what is on the TV.

For the upmarket woman they have more luxury fashion brands of magazines these are different to the mass marker woman types of magazines because the upmarket women have more money to spend and are more expensive than the other magazines. Some of the magazines they include are: Marie Claire and InStyle, lifestyle brands such as: woman&home and essentials, and also home interest brands such as: ideal home, living etc and housetohome. These magazines are more expensive than any other magazines.
